Storage stability depends on water content, oxygen exposure, and temperature. Lyophilized solids are hygroscopic and can absorb water if exposed to humid air. Vials are usually sealed under vacuum or inert gas with rubber stoppers and aluminum crimps. Storage temperatures range from room temperature to refrigerated or frozen conditions depending on the material. Stability studies track potency, moisture, and physical form over time. Accelerated conditions can reveal sensitivity but may not predict long-term behavior.
Analytical methods for lyophilized materials include X-ray diffraction for crystallinity, differential scanning calorimetry for thermal transitions, and scanning electron microscopy for pore morphology. Moisture sorption analysis shows how the cake responds to humidity. These methods help distinguish amorphous from crystalline states and detect phase changes. Open questions remain about how pore structure changes during long-term storage and how best to predict collapse under varied conditions. Comparisons across studies are complicated by differences in formulation, cycle, and storage history.
Regulatory expectations for lyophilized products focus on consistent manufacture and documented stability. Batches are often monitored for moisture, appearance, potency, and sterility where applicable. Process parameters such as shelf temperature, chamber pressure, and drying time are recorded and controlled within validated ranges. Open questions remain about how best to predict long-term stability from short accelerated studies, especially for complex biologics. Variations in freezing rate and ice crystal size can produce differences that are not always visible but may affect performance.
After drying, a lyophilized product is usually sealed under vacuum or an inert gas to limit moisture uptake. Residual water content is measured because small changes can alter chemical stability and cake appearance. Storage temperature depends on the material; many biological products are kept at 2–8 °C, while some require −20 °C or colder. Exposure to ambient humidity during handling can cause the porous solid to absorb water and collapse. Container closures and stoppers are therefore selected for low moisture transmission and compatibility.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | White to off-white porous cake | Color and texture vary with formulation. |
| Reconstitution time | Seconds to several minutes | Depends on cake porosity, excipients, and diluent. |
| Typical moisture level | 0.5-3% w/w | Lower values suit hydrolysis-sensitive materials. |
| Common moisture method | Karl Fischer titration | Coulometric mode is common for low water levels. |
| Typical storage temperature | 2-8 °C or ambient | Some products require frozen storage; protect from humidity. |
Handling practices aim to prevent moisture ingress and mechanical damage. Vials should remain stoppered and crimped until use, and reconstitution should follow the labeled diluent and volume. Shipping may involve temperature-controlled containers and desiccants, but direct contact between desiccant and product is avoided. Regulatory guidance expects documented storage conditions, excursion assessments, and stability commitments. Open questions remain about how best to predict long-term stability from short accelerated studies for every formulation class.
After lyophilization, the product is usually a porous cake or powder with a large internal surface area. This structure can absorb moisture quickly if exposed to humid air, so vials are sealed under vacuum or an inert gas. Moisture uptake may lower the glass transition temperature of the dried matrix and accelerate chemical or physical degradation. Storage conditions therefore depend on the formulation, container, and intended shelf life. Some products remain stable at room temperature, while others require refrigeration or freezing.
Misconceptions about lyophilization include the idea that dried products are indefinitely stable or that vacuum sealing eliminates all degradation. Chemical reactions can continue in the solid state, and some proteins lose activity even at low moisture. Another misconception is that any freeze-dryer cycle can be scaled by time alone; heat and mass transfer differ with equipment and load. Open questions remain about predicting long-term stability from short accelerated studies, particularly for amorphous formulations. Real-time stability data remain the standard for shelf-life assignment.
After lyophilization, the dried product is often sealed under vacuum or an inert gas to limit moisture and oxygen exposure. Vials, stoppers, and seals must maintain their barrier throughout shelf life. Storage temperature depends on product sensitivity: some cakes tolerate controlled room temperature, while labile biologics require refrigeration. Humidity is a critical variable because dried cakes are hygroscopic and can absorb water when exposed to air. Handling procedures therefore limit open-vial time and use desiccated environments for sampling.
Quality control for lyophilized materials examines appearance, reconstitution time, residual moisture, and mechanical integrity. An acceptable cake is usually uniform and porous, though appearance alone does not prove stability. Karl Fischer titration is a common method for water content, while differential scanning calorimetry can reveal glass transition events. Stability studies track potency, aggregation, and moisture over time under defined temperature and humidity conditions. Specifications are product-specific and may include sterility and endotoxin tests for sterile preparations.
Handling and storage practices aim to keep the cake intact and dry. Vials are typically stored upright at controlled temperatures, often between 2 °C and 8 °C or at -20 °C for longer-term use. Reconstitution involves adding a suitable diluent and gently mixing until the solid dissolves. Shaking or rapid injection of diluent can create foam or damage sensitive molecules. Once reconstituted, the product may require refrigeration and use within a defined period.
Residual moisture is a key quality attribute for lyophilized products. Water that remains after secondary drying can affect chemical stability, cake structure, and shelf life. Karl Fischer titration is a common method for measuring water content in the dried solid. The target range varies by product, but many biologics are dried to between 0.5% and 3% water by weight. Acceptable limits are set during development and confirmed by stability studies.
Stability studies examine how temperature, humidity, and time influence a lyophilized product. Accelerated conditions provide early information about degradation pathways, while long-term studies support shelf-life claims. The glass transition temperature of the dried formulation can indicate its physical stability, and storage above this temperature may increase molecular mobility and lead to collapse or aggregation. Container closure integrity also matters because moisture or oxygen ingress can degrade the product, so vial stoppers and seals are part of the quality system.
== Etymology == The earliest known record of the name Belize appears in the journal of the Dominican priest Fray José Delgado, dating to 1677. Delgado recorded the names of three major rivers that he crossed while travelling north along the Caribbean coast: Rio Soyte (Sittee River), Rio Kibum Sibun River, and Rio Balis (Belize River). The waterways' names were provided to Delgado by his translator. It has been proposed that Delgado's "Balis" was actually the Mayan word belix (or beliz), meaning "muddy water", although no such Mayan word actually exists. More recently, it has been proposed that the name comes from the Mayan phrase bel Itza ("the way to Itza"). In the 1820s, the legend grew up that the toponym Belize derived from the Spanish pronunciation of the name of a Scottish buccaneer, Peter Wallace, said to have established a settlement at the mouth of the Belize River in 1638. There is no proof that buccaneers settled in this area and there is no evidence of the very existence of Wallace. Writers and historians have suggested several other possible etymologies, including postulated French and African origins.
== Signs and symptoms == The characteristic symptom is numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the thumb, index, middle, and radial half of the ring finger. These areas process sensation through the median nerve. Numbness or tingling is usually worse with sleep. People tend to sleep with their wrists flexed, which increases pressure on the nerve. Ache and discomfort may be reported in the forearm or even the upper arm. Symptoms that are not as characteristic of CTS include pain in the wrists or hands, loss of grip strength, minor loss of sleep, and loss of manual dexterity. Severe CTS is associated with measurable loss of sensibility. As the median neuropathy progresses, there is loss of sensibility in the thumb, index, middle, and the thumb side of the ring finger. As the neuropathy progresses, there may be first weakness, then atrophy of the muscles of thenar eminence (the flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis, and abductor pollicis brevis). The sensibility of the palm remains normal because the superficial sensory branch of the median nerve branches proximal to the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) and travels superficial to it. Median nerve symptoms may arise from nerve compression at the level of the thoracic outlet or the area where the median nerve passes between the two heads of the pronator teres in the forearm, although this is debated. Severe CTS is also associated with weakness and atrophy of the muscles at the base of the thumb. The ability to abduct the thumb may be lost.
When ion source parameters are properly adjusted, the faster group of ions catches up to the slower one at some distance from the ion source, so the detector plate placed at this distance detects simultaneous arrival of these groups of ions. In its way, the delayed application of the acceleration field acts as a one-dimensional time-of-flight focusing element.
== Overdose == An overdose of methaqualone can lead to coma and death. Additional effects are delirium, convulsions, hypertonia, hyperreflexia, vomiting, kidney failure, and death through cardiac or respiratory arrest. Methaqualone overdose resembles barbiturate poisoning, but with increased motor difficulties and a lower incidence of cardiac or respiratory depression. The standard single tablet adult dose of Quaalude brand of methaqualone was 300 mg when made by Lemmon. A dose of 8000 mg is lethal and a dose as little as 2000 mg could induce a coma if taken with an alcoholic beverage.
The structure of hemoglobins varies across species. Hemoglobin occurs in all kingdoms of organisms, but not in all organisms. Primitive species such as bacteria, protozoa, algae, and plants often have single-globin hemoglobins. Many nematode worms, molluscs, and crustaceans contain very large multisubunit molecules, much larger than those in vertebrates. In particular, chimeric hemoglobins found in fungi and giant annelids may contain both globin and other types of proteins. One of the most striking occurrences and uses of hemoglobin in organisms is in the giant tube worm (Riftia pachyptila, also called Vestimentifera), which can reach 2.4 meters length and populates ocean volcanic vents. Instead of a digestive tract, these worms contain a population of bacteria constituting half the organism's weight. The bacteria oxidize H2S from the vent with O2 from the water to produce energy to make food from H2O and CO2. The worms' upper end is a deep-red fan-like structure ("plume"), which extends into the water and absorbs H2S and O2 for the bacteria, and CO2 for use as synthetic raw material similar to photosynthetic plants. The structures are bright red due to their content of several extraordinarily complex hemoglobins that have up to 144 globin chains, each including associated heme structures. These hemoglobins are remarkable for being able to carry oxygen in the presence of sulfide, and even to carry sulfide, without being completely "poisoned" or inhibited by it as hemoglobins in most other species are.

== Operations == Each Waffle House location is open 24 hours daily. This schedule has inspired the urban myth that "Waffle House doors have no locks". The chain's restaurants almost always have jukeboxes, which traditionally play 45-rpm singles and, in some cases, CDs. Waffle House has released music through its own record label, Waffle Records. It has released songs from "Saturday Night At My Place" by Gary Garcia released in 1995 to "They're Cooking Up My Order" by Alfreda Gerald released in 2006. The co-founder Joe Rogers Sr. had high standards and said, "If it sounded like a commercial, it got the ax." If the song makes the cut, it will be recorded and make its way to Waffle House jukeboxes. The songs are on ordinary discs, which are produced for Waffle House and are not commercially sold, but the chain has made a CD of some of the songs available for sale. Other artists that recorded for Waffle Records include Eddie Middleton who recorded "Good Food Fast" and "Waffle Doo-Wop," which was composed and produced by Jerry Buckner. The company claims to be the world's leading seller of several of its menu items—the namesake waffles, ham, pork chops, grits, and T-bone steaks. It also claims that it serves 2% of all eggs in the U.S. In the 1960s, S. Truett Cathy, the owner of a local diner called the Dwarf House, contracted with Waffle House to sell his proprietary chicken sandwich, the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich.
== Edibility == While sources on the edibility of P.arhizus differ regarding its safety, it’s worth noting that it could be toxic and eating it is not a safe choice. While one paper mentions putting it in soup, it’s not recommended due to its unappealing texture, taste, and consistency. Due to its growth habits it is speculated that the fungi can absorb and contain pollutants or harmful compounds from its environment.
Consider the case of a nuclide A that decays into another B by some process A → B (emission of other particles, like electron neutrinos νe and electrons e− as in beta decay, are irrelevant in what follows). The decay of an unstable nucleus is entirely random in time so it is impossible to predict when a particular atom will decay. However, it is equally likely to decay at any instant in time. Therefore, given a sample of a particular radioisotope, the number of decay events −dN expected to occur in a small interval of time dt is proportional to the number of atoms present N, that is
Certain progestins, namely cyproterone acetate and medroxyprogesterone acetate and as described previously, are used at high doses as functional antiandrogens due to their antigonadotropic effects to help suppress testosterone levels in transgender women. Aside from the specific use of testosterone suppression however, there are no other indications of progestogens in transgender women at present. In relation to this, the use of progestogens in transgender women is controversial, and they are not otherwise routinely prescribed or recommended. Besides progesterone, cyproterone acetate, and medroxyprogesterone acetate, other progestogens that have been reported to have been used in transgender women include hydroxyprogesterone caproate, dydrogesterone, norethisterone acetate, and drospirenone. Progestins in general largely have the same progestogenic effects however, and in theory, any progestin could be used in transgender women. Clinical research on the use of progestogens in transgender women is very limited. Some patients and clinicians believe, on the basis of anecdotal and subjective claims, that progestogens may provide benefits such as improved breast and/or nipple development, mood, and libido in transgender women. There are no clinical studies to support such reports at present. No clinical study has assessed the use of progesterone in transgender women, and only a couple of studies have compared the use of progestins (specifically cyproterone acetate and medroxyprogesterone acetate) versus the use of no progestogen in transgender women.

== Formal oxidation states for pyrite, marcasite, molybdenite and arsenopyrite == From the perspective of classical inorganic chemistry, which assigns formal oxidation states to each atom, pyrite and marcasite are probably best described as Fe2+[S2]2−. This formalism recognizes that the sulfur atoms in pyrite occur in pairs with clear S−S bonds. These persulfide [−S−S−] units can be viewed as derived from hydrogen disulfide, H2S2. Thus pyrite would be more descriptively called iron persulfide, not iron disulfide. In contrast, molybdenite, MoS2, features isolated sulfide S2− centers and the oxidation state of molybdenum is Mo4+. The mineral arsenopyrite has the formula FeAsS. Whereas pyrite has [S2]2− units, arsenopyrite has [AsS]3− units, formally derived from deprotonation of arsenothiol (H2AsSH). Analysis of classical oxidation states would recommend the description of arsenopyrite as Fe3+[AsS]3−.

Karl Fischer titration is a common method, using coulometric or volumetric detection. Thermogravimetric analysis can also measure weight loss on heating. Results depend on sample handling because the dried solid can absorb moisture quickly.
The porous cake readily absorbs water vapor from air, which can reduce stability or cause collapse. Vials are sealed with stoppers and crimp seals, sometimes under vacuum or inert gas. Packaging also protects against oxygen and mechanical damage.
Collapse occurs when the product temperature rises above its collapse threshold during primary drying. The ice matrix loses structure, and the cake may shrink or melt back. Formulation excipients and freezing rate influence collapse threshold.
Most are held in sealed containers at controlled temperatures, often 2–8 °C, while some require frozen storage. Protection from moisture and light helps preserve the dry matrix. Exact conditions are set by the manufacturer or study protocol.
